Journalism

In the 1961-1962 academic year, Irkutsk State University established a new Department at the Faculty of History and Philology – the Department of Journalism. 

From the very first years, a strong philological core of the Department was formed. It was presented by brilliant stylists of the Russian language, candidates of philological sciences, associate professors.

Throughout the years, many specialists of different fields worked at the Department. The teaching staff of the Department of Journalism consisted of graduates of different years and practicing journalists who shared their professional experience with the students.

Over the years, many staff members, editors and reporters of all the leading regional mass media, staff reporters and special correspondents of national press, employees of news agencies were visiting professors at the Faculty. They taught students journalistic skills, were in charge of practical training, supervised and reviewed graduation theses. The tradition of close cooperation continues today.

Main thematic priorities

The Department of Journalism and Media Management of the Faculty of Philology and Journalism of Irkutsk State University works in accordance with the state educational standard in the basic educational programme of higher professional education in the specialty 030601 Journalism (5 years of study) and in the field of study 031300 Journalism (4 years of study, Bachelor's Degree Programme). Students can obtain the degree in intramural, extramural and short extramural (on the basis of higher education) forms. Moreover, according to the license, there is a postgraduate education in the specialty 10.01.10 Journalism (intramural and extramural forms of education). In addition, Journalism Master's Degree Programme is licensed in accordance with the List of accredited educational programmes of Irkutsk State University.

Teaching of general professional and special disciplines is carried out together with other Departments of the Faculty of Philology and Journalism and other structural units of Irkutsk State University. 5 doctors of sciences and 29 candidates of sciences, including 8 professors and 26 associate professors, as well as 11 practicing journalists, including heads of the leading regional mass media work with student journalists.

The curriculum provides practical training after each year of education: academic training, three on-the-job trainings and undergraduate training.  The practical training organizations are set by the relevant agreements with the media of Irkutsk and the region. Annually, at the end of the autumn term, conferences summarizing the results of practical trainings take place.  Together with the regional organization of the Union of Journalists, competitions for the best student publications are held.
